Revitalizing Access: A New Bridge Over Buck Creek

At Branson Gilliland Excavating, we pride ourselves on tackling challenging projects with the right mix of expertise and high-quality materials. We had the privilege of reconstructing a bridge over Buck Creek in Bloomington, IN. This bridge, which provides the only access to three residences, had fallen into disrepair. Over the years, it had begun to sink, crumble, and, worst of all, lacked proper drainage. This poor condition resulted in frequent flooding, which was becoming an inconvenience for residents.

Old Bridge Demolition

Before we could build the new bridge, the old structure had to be carefully demolished. The existing bridge was crumbling, so we made sure to safely remove the debris while minimizing disruption to the surrounding area. Our team took special care to handle the demolition with precision, ensuring the site was clear and prepared for the new construction.

Bridge Design and Build

Once the old bridge was demolished, we were able to begin the reconstruction process:

1. Digging the Footers:
We started by excavating the site and digging robust footers to support the new structure. Proper foundation work is essential to ensure the bridge will withstand the weight and weather conditions for years to come.

2. Pouring Sturdy 8" Walls:
Next, we constructed 8-inch thick walls to provide a solid base. These walls were built with precision, designed to be strong and durable to carry the weight of traffic while ensuring the safety of those who use the bridge daily.

3. Setting 48" Culvert Pipes:
We then set 48-inch culvert pipes, crucial for ensuring proper water flow beneath the bridge. These pipes prevent flooding by facilitating drainage and redirecting water efficiently.

4. Top-Quality Concrete and Reinforcement:
For maximum durability, we used top-grade Class C 5000psi concrete mixed with #5 rebar to reinforce the structure. This ensures the bridge will remain intact under heavy load and harsh weather conditions for many years.

5. Building the Forms and Pours:
Our skilled team built the necessary forms to shape the structure, set the culverts, and installed Sonotube® forms. Once everything was in place, we poured the concrete, ensuring every step was meticulously executed to guarantee strength and precision.

The finished product is a bridge that’s built to last, ensuring safe and reliable access for years to come. The new structure not only improves the safety of the residents but also solves the drainage problems, reducing the risk of future flooding.
