Residential Yard Cleanup, Drainage Install, and Grading

Bloomington, Indiana Home Yard Overhaul

A customer called us about the yard which was in much need of attention. Not only was their yard overgrown with unruly weeds taking over, but there were also some stumps cluttering the landscape. For the first part of this project, all of this needed to be removed. This outdoor space also had drainage issues to address. A well-maintained landscape can increase property value and prevent costly repairs later. Our excavating experts were on the job with a solution!

Tree Stump Removal

The customer had previously removed some trees from the yard but the stumps were left. It is common for homeowners to leave the stumps thinking that while it may not look pretty, it is harmless.

However, this is not true. In addition to being a tripping hazard, over time the root and stump will start to rot. Fungus will start to grow and insects will make it their home. This can and can cause health risks for people but it is also not healthy for a residential yard. While some choose to only remove the sump and leave the roots, it is always best to remove it all. Leaving the roots becomes problematic because as they start to rot, the ground around where the stump was will start to cave and become lumpy.

Our crew removed the tree stumps by digging around them and grinding them out. This was the best solution to take care of the unsightly stumps and protect the yard from pests.

Every landscape needs a proper drainage system!

A big part of this complete yard cleanup and overhaul project includes water management. When it rains, where does the water go? Without proper planning and intentional drainage pathways, water can accumulate, sit stagnant in the yard, or seep into basements or other home structures. Water can cause significant damage fairly quickly if drainage is not properly managed.

Catch Basin for Water Drainage

We installed an outside, catch basin in the yard where water is collected. This includes installing a plastic catch basin with a sump area to catch leaves and debris from clogging the system. The water then goes into a drainage pipe that routes water away from the property.

A hole was dug for the catch basin, stones go beneath it, and it is level with the topsoil. A trench was also dug to place water drainage piping. It was installed with a slight slope so that water would flow in the right direction - to the higher spots in the yard and toward the road.

Downspout Water Redirected to Main Drain Line

Where was the water coming from? Installing the best drainage solution for any yard means locating the sources of water. Because at this property, the downspouts lead to the yard and produce a lot of water, our team incorporated them into the main drain line. Again, this directed all of the water toward the road and away from the house and yard.

Residential Yard Grading

After the tree stumps were removed and the water drainage was managed, Branson Gilliland Excavating pros graded the yard. Yard grading is important for the long-term health of any yard. The grading process included making sure everything was flat, even, and spread properly for future use. Our crews are experts with the equipment to grade a yard quickly and properly at a slight slope to support water drainage.

Lastly, we planted grass seed and covered the grass seed with straw to protect it and help it grow.
